Lesson: Safety Matters
Intro: Being independent means that you accountable for yourself and your safety. We have developed an acronym for safety. Tell, Take, & Look. (TTL) Outcome: To understand that everyone’s number one job is to ensure his/her safety. Direction: Say: As young children, it is our parents’ responsibility to keep us safe. As we mature, we own this responsibility, especially when we are away and independent from our parents and caregivers. Our safety is our priority. In fact, the number one rule in any situation or relationship is safety first. You must be safe at all times and in order to do this you must: Tell, Take, & Look. (TTL) Always Tell someone where you are going and with whom. Always Take some form of communication device so that you can inform someone if your plans change. Always Look around; know where you are, and have an exit plan. Remember an exit plan is something that you have practiced that you will do to leave a situation when you don’t feel safe. We recommend having a code word/phrase that you are able to share with parents, friends, and guardians so that they know you need help. Practice TTL. I am going to provide the situation and you will provide the TTL. Here’s a situation… You’re invited to a party. You’re invited to the beach. You’re invited to the movies. You’re invited to the mall. You’re invited to a friend’s home. You’re in a friend’s car while he/she is driving. You are on a date. You are meeting someone new. Wisdom: Your safety is your number one responsibility.
